A computer navigation system for the artificial knee joint

When an artificial knee joint is implanted, an alignment rod has been used to adjust the cutting surface of the femur and tibia. With this system, only 70% of patients were undergone less than three degrees of error. The smaller error brings better long-term result. Currently, clinical trials of a computer navigation system for the artificial knee joint are performed in several hospitals in Japan. Assistant professor Shuichi Matsuda (Orthopaedic Surgery) is testing this system, and found that all the patients had the knees implanted within three degrees of error.
