Greeting from the Newly Appointed Professor Tomotake Kanki, Department of Cellular Physiology

My name is Tomotake Kanki, and I was appointed as a Professor in the Department of Cellular Physiology on April 1st, 2024.
I graduated from Kyushu University School of Medicine in 1997 and joined the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Kyushu University. After I received the degree in Department of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine in 2003, I worked at Columbia University, University of Michigan, Kyushu University, and since 2012 I have been leading a laboratory at Niigata University. I became fascinated with mitochondrial research when I was a graduate student and have been consistently working on mitochondria. Currently, I am particularly interested in mitochondrial genome, mitochondrial morphology, and mitochondrial degradation by autophagy (mitophagy), and I aim to expand from our basic studies to elucidate the pathogenesis of various diseases including mitochondrial diseases and develop therapeutic methods.
At Kyushu University, I am in charge of physiology and would like to devote myself to the training of young researchers. I look forward to working with you all.
