Is an ARB a dream drug against stroke?

Stroke is a common disease in Japan, a well-known country as a hypertension kingdom. Estimated 2,700 thousands are suffering from stroke in 2006, 40% of them bedridden and being serious cause of dementia as well. Professor Setsuro Ibayashi commented on precautions for preventing stroke. It is important to change lifestyle to a better one by daily exercise, avoiding salty and fatty diet, keeping ideal body weight and normal blood pressure. The novel antihypertensive drug, angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), might not only lower blood pressure, but also prevent newly developed atrial fibrillation as well as diabetes mellitus to decrease stroke in such a pleiotropic manner.
